RN #143 The Map of Cadwallader Jones 1698

A detailed analysis of the map drawn by Cadwallader Jones is contained in this notebook.  He was responding to the French maps recently published by Louis Hennepin (1683) which gave the French view of the Ohio Valley.  Each written comment, figure, and text, was translated and analyzed.  A copy of the title figure is shown below.

It is a summary of his personnel exploration over a eleven year period.  The original map is in the British Public Record Office, British Transcripts, No. 1310.  A copy titled: Cadwallader Jones "Essay about the Indian Trade with a MS map of plot of Louisiana", Manuscript Division. Library of Congress.
