RN #268 Associated Jones

Over the years a group of individual JONES shared a first name.  This often produced a number of brick walls caused by this fact.  This notebook contains a number of names that formed a group of folks that were sorted (or presently being sorted) among the branches.  I have called this my collection of associated Jones names.  The ones included in this notebook are: 1) James , 2) Gabriel , 3) Thornton (surname) , 4) Gabriel (attorney) , 5) Catlet (surname) , 6) Slaughter (surname) , and 7) Taliaferro (surname).  There is also a flow chart of the formation of various counties in VA which these names became interwoven.  It is still a work in progress.

RN #267 Group Sheets: 22 May 1650

People, places, and purpose are my three "P's".  When all three items come together at one point [4th P...:-)], they represent a common bond that will often break through a brick wall.  For my own family it was 22 May 1650.  This notebook contains my work on these three "P's".

A number of associated family groups [various other surnames than JONES] arrived Virginia on the same date, and recorded their land grants at the same time.  My JONES family flopped right down in the middle of these folks, and for many generations seemed connected.  Placing these folks in a "cluster analysis" it became evident that they were a group of "in-laws" who were "outlawed"  during the same time period!  What a deal!

The above figure shows some of these families as they came untangled among the branches.  The "Underwood" family seems to be the center of focus, and continues to be a family associated group for many generations to come.  All the folks who made a land grant 22 May 1650 along the Rappahanock River are included in this notebook.

RN #259 Jefferye(s)

Associated family surnames are part of the family tree climbing experience.  Multiple surnames come into play when facing certain brick walls.  For those of Welsh descent, it may even be that certain families come through a common great-grandfather meaning that they actually share the same Y-chromosome.  The Jeffery family of north Wales is such a case. 

This note book contains my research into this surname.  It began being spelled "Geoffrey" in the Norman Duke's battle against the French Kings. [starting before 1060 AD]  "Geoffrey of Anjou" seems to be the first to use this name.  The name moves to England, often connected to religious groups.   The spelling chances through various forms to Wales and the many counties of England.  The content included:

RN #245 Regression Analysis - Related Surnames (Vol. I)

(Old) Rappahannock County, Virginia deed/will abstracts, and the order book abstracts from 1656 to 1692 give a record of my early JONES family in Virginia.  The associated brick walls are numerous trying to climb the many branches.  This notebook contains my attempts by a method I call "Regression Analysis".   That is, starting with a date, and going in "regression" (backward in time) in a detailed account, placing associated family surnames in order of their occurrence.  An example is given below:

The Catlett family had a large role in connecting my JONES family to the county of Kent.  The figure above shows one page from the analysis for this surname.  William Catlett, John Smyth, and Ralph Rowzee are connected in a record of 18 Sept. 1690.  Going back in time (regression) each record that contains the surname "Catlett" is placed in order.  Associated surnames are then analyzed.

RN #214 Our Family's Genealogy by Surname

Associated surnames that are directly related by Y-DNA are very common among those from Welsh descent.  After 50 some years of tree climbing, I have come to recognize that my JONES surname is more related to those of other particular surnames of Welsh descent, rather than the many, many others of the JONES surname.  The following notebook contains the associated surnames (family groups) that are shared by the same common descent.  An example is shown for the surname Lloid (Lloyd) which come through the same family tree Tudor Trevor (JC-1) - Dingd (JD-3) and on down the branches.

This line is to David Lloyd (JV-95) to Jenkin Lloyd (JW-39) to Edward Lloyd (JX-22) who married Ursula Salesbury(JX-23) of Lleweny.  The documentation from Dwnn is shown in the next figure from Dwnn [Vol.II, p.23 ]
